There are so many motor oil options available today, so we understand it may seem scary walking down the aisles of the auto parts store. There are many different brands, prices, and additives to consider. To eliminate any stress, we’re here to tell you that there are only three types of engines that you should know about – they are conventional, synthetic, and semi-synthetic. Then there’s also a small subcategory of oils made for high-mileage vehicles or vehicles that have surpassed 75,000-100,000 miles.
Conventional Oil
Conventional oil is the most standard engine oil that you can get. It is solely petroleum-based and refined to keep your motor lubricated and clean. A select few of them may have additives. They are generally the cheapest option on the market. Overall, they get the job done and are a good choice for basic engines.
Synthetic Oil
Many people consider full synthetic motor oil the “best” you can get. However, there is no such thing as bad oil on the market today. There are more advantages when you use full synthetic oil over the others. Synthetic oil is the most expensive, but it is known for providing maximum protection in various driving conditions. Additionally, it lasts in the engine the longest. Whether you are a race car driver, tow truck driver, or standard everyday stop-and-go traffic driver, you can use synthetic oil. That is why some people justify the premium price tag, while others do not.
Semi-Synthetic Oil
If you’re one of those people who don’t see the hype in full synthetic oil, consider choosing a synthetic blend. It's a combination of both conventional and fully synthetic. Semi-synthetic oils offer the flexibility and most of the other benefits of full synthetic oil at a lower price. They are an excellent choice for anybody.
All in all, there is no best motor oil out there. Formulas of motor oil today are better than ever before, and they are capable of keeping your engine clean and lubricated. You should choose a motor oil that is recommended by your automaker because they know best for your vehicle’s car model.
